Shopping Malls: The Undoing of a Once-Intellectual

I went shopping with Jessica on Tuesday and have decided that I hate bookstores. Is that all one word? Bookstores? Book stores? Whatever. I hate them.

I had put myself on a budget of $60 for the day. Borders was our second stop, and having already spent $20 on a sweatshirt for work at Old Navy, and with Macy's and The Avenue still to look forward to, I could not make a decision.

When I lived in Seattle there was a used bookstore just a few blocks away that was open all night on Friday and Saturday. I could stop in there and pick up five, six, ten books and not break the bank. And I never had to settle on just one.

The dilemma while at Borders was that I had no one book in particular that I wished to buy, so I was forced to browse. At first I was attracted to the "Buy 2, get the 3rd free!" paperback table. Nothing there really grabbed my attention, and each of the books was at least $13 meaning that I would have to invest $25 or $30 into two books I wasn't thrilled about to recieve a third for free. After choosing and rejecting and re-choosing three books several times, I put them all back and started looking around for something I really wanted. I discovered that they had a little rack dedicated to Gregory Maguire and was presented with yet another dilemma.

After reading Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister several years ago, I had been meaning to also read Wicked and Mirror Mirror. Borders had all three for sale and I quickly grabbed the two I hadn't read. They were $15 each, so I determined that I would have to choose just one. But how to choose?! And why should I choose one of these books, and not American Gods which I had passed while trying to find Jessica to demand that she help me make a decision, and which had been highly recommended by an old friend whose taste in books is very similar to mine?

I ended up putting them all back and telling Jessica to get me the hell out of there. And I ended up spending the rest of my daily budget at Macy's and The Avenue. Go figure.
