It's been about a month since my vision went down, right? There are days when I think maybe it's getting better but then I squint my 'good' eye and there's still that same foggy blur over my left eye. I suppose I'm adjusting to it.
I've never seen well at night, so it's been even trickier since the optic neuritis showed up. I try to avoid the highway in the dark, but today after a trip to Ellensburg I realized that I'd been charged twice for something and would have to drive all the way back to fix it. I would have waited, but my next day off is Tuesday and I was worried that if I had to deal with a different manager it might be a difficult issue to resolve. I wanted to deal with the same supervisor, so I drove to Ellensburg in the dark. Don't worry, this isn't a post about an accident or a near-miss.
There are a few ways to get to Ellensburg: highway 97, which I'm not very familiar with, highway 10, which is quiet and beautiful and a popular animal crossing, and I-90, which is heavily traveled at fast speeds. Last week my brother and I almost hit an elk bigger than my car, so I didn't want to tempt fate with the wildlife at twilight, and I wasn't keen on driving 60 miles an hour with poor visibility on a road I rarely drive, so I took the freeway.
I drive I-90 to Ellensburg often enough that there are never really any surprises, but not often enough that I know all of the corners by heart. I would flick on my brights in every turn, praying a silent apology to the oncoming traffic across the median, and on the way back I decided to take highway 10. There was nobody around, so I drove the whole way at 35 or 40 with my high beams on, constantly checking the sides of the road for deer trying to cross. I made it home with no drama, but was reminded several times that I don't like driving long distances after sunset.
So, I endured a full hour of stress for $21, and I just tricked you into reading 4 paragraphs of nothing. I hope you were bored.
The next three movies I will be watching, courtesy of Netflix:
1: Spider
2: The Man Who Wasn't There
3: The House Of Yes
